Detention. It was so unfair. For once it hadn’t even been his fault. He had just been the one getting caught at the wrong place and wrong time. Some Gryffindor boy had ran past him and in the confusing moment, pushed a book in his hand and sprinted away right after. Even before he could check what the contents of the book were, to figure out what it was exactly or who it belonged to, the Hufflepuff headboy had turned the corner as well. Apparently the book was his, and his astronomy homework was in it. They happened to be in the same year, and he had accused him of trying to copy his homework.

And for some inexplicable reason the professor had believed him. He knew well enough it was because of his reputation, and that of the other boy as well. It seemed more plausible he was speaking the truth, and Oskar wasn’t. So now he had to go do extra homework after classes, instead of enjoying a free evening. He had made his way to the astronomy classroom. At least he wasn’t skipping it. With a firm knock on the door he walked in. ”Oskar Agard reporting for detention”, He said with a straight face, though his voice gave away how unexcited he was for the upcoming hour.

Students oftentimes didn’t realise that detention was actually the worst for their professor. Or so it was in the astronomy professor’s case. Ylva had to actually get up in the middle of the day to open up her classroom for the detainees. Fortunately today, there was only one of those, but she’d still lose sleep over it. Normally, she’d get up at dusk, have ‘breakfast’ and teach her classes throughout the night -which she realised lost students a lot of sleep, but that would only be once a week. (If the nights were clear enough, that was.) When breakfast was served in the Great Hall, Ylva would have her supper. Detention hours were horribly given to her at five in the afternoon, and the Headmaster had told her it would be unethical to change them. She understood, but that didn’t make it any less unpleasant.
Sleep still clinging to her face, she settled behind her desk in the astronomy classroom. Chances were her student wouldn’t even show, which she was secretly hoping for. Another few hours of sleep would be very welcome. She was known for being particular about her homework, and Oskar had committed an offence in that category, but this week had simply been too tiring. She hadn’t exactly figured out yet how to tell her son that his dad whom he’d never even met before had returned in the form of Hogwarts’s janitor…
A loud knock on the door made her look up from the essays she’d absentmindedly been assessing. She was somewhat surprised that he’d shown, she wouldn’t deny that. Actually, she was quite impressed. Oskar didn’t seem particularly excited, and he spoke as though he’d come to turn himself in for a three year prison sentence. Ylva suppressed a grin. She loved that about Slytherins, that they didn’t try to hold onto a fake positivity. They generally just told you what they meant. After putting a checkmark after mister Agard’s name on her quill, she took off her glasses and nodded in his direction. ’Perfect.’ The professor stood up from her seat and opened her desk drawer to reveal a cloth. ’Listen, I believe you’re intelligent enough to catch up with the others on your own time, am I wrong?’ There was a silence, but her question was strictly rhetorical; of course she wasn’t wrong. She waved the cloth around and eventually threw it at him. ’The telescopes need cleaning,’ was her instruction.

It was sad he hadn’t really seen the face of the Gryffindor boy. He could vaguely remember he had brown hair and he was wearing the familiar red-and-yellow scarf. A description that probably fit 95% of the students in his house. Else he would make sure the boy paid for what he had caused. Now he had to spend an hour with professor Nephelae. Normally he didn’t have much quarrel with the woman, but he was well aware she usually slept until at least dinner time. Which meant she had woken up early. He sincerely hoped she was not in a bad mood. Last thing he wanted to deal with was a grumpy professor who was possibly annoyed with him already because she thought he had tried to cheat on her homework.

So he was expecting a more difficult assignment now, one he would have to hand in by the end of the hour. He had prepared for that, as he was even carrying some books from the library and his own notes. Then, she decided to surprise him. Oskar looked at her as if she had just cursed him. He caught the piece of cloth out of the air. ”Of course they do”, He deeply sighed. He did not like this one bit. Didn’t they have a janitor to clean those damned telescopes?

The boy dropped his bag on one of the tables and walked over to the first of many telescopes that were lined up along the wall. Carefully he took off the cap and started dusting off the lens, before he rubbed the case as well. One by one he worked his way down the chain of endless telescopes that needed cleaning. It was a repetitive job, one that quickly made him lose focus. In the beginning, he had been careful. Now.. Not that much anymore. So it was no surprise the next one he grabbed suddenly slipped through his fingers. With a loud thud the equipment ended up on the floor. He could swear he had heard the glass breaking too, but he was too in shock to actually check as he just stared at the telescope in disbelief.

Part of the reason she had decided to have her detainees -or singular in this case- clean the telescopes, was because she had to keep her own classroom clean from now on. No more janitors allowed. Especially if they were called Marcus. Ylva had expected just a little bit more excitement than she’d gotten from mister Agard so far. She hadn’t taken him for someone who’d rather spent the hour sitting still behind a desk, feverishly scribbling a quillful of unnecessary words. Or maybe it was his general mood to be easily bored. The look he gave her could’ve turned her to stone she reckoned, had he possessed that kind of magic. The Slytherin caught the cloth, sighed deeply and started towards the line of spare telescopes, accompanied by his own, continuous complaining. Ylva turned to her own work, but soon found her mind wandering. She kept reading the same sentences four times, suppressing various yawns as she struggled her way through the essays. Could you blame her if she had the same subjects in front of her over and over again? Orion, how many times had that been chosen? Were none of her pupils aware that they were this unoriginal? She found herself getting more and more irritated. Of course she had to remain professional, but she was also a human witch and this whole Marcus situation just kind of took her focus off things. In the end, she’d stopped assessing altogether and just stared at the edges of the parchment until the went blurry. Scenarios played in her head. Of Sirius meeting Marcus, of Marcus never wanting to speak to her again, of Marcus snapping at Isabella. Of Marcus. Her thoughts had completely taken hold of her in a way she could only remember from her twenties, of when she’d been in love. She wasn’t used to feeling so out of control anymore.
Probably part of the reason she practically jumped out of her skin when a loud sound reverberated through the classroom. Her head shot towards Oskars direction. The boy stood there as if in shock, but Ylva reacted a little bit more quickly for her liking -thank you adrenaline. In a matter of seconds, she was behind him, concluding the lens was shattered. ’For Merlin’s sake, Agard, do you want your house to lose this year?’ She knew she wasn’t reacting in the most professional way -and therefore in the most emotional one. She gritted her teeth. ’That’s a point from Slytherin.’ That was the best bit. He was a Slytherin, so was Marcus. She needed to ventilate her frustrations, and Oskar conveniently happened to have made a small mistake.

It was hard enough as it was to be liked by the people of his house. Or by anyone, for that matter. He did have some talents and skills that could make him stand out. It was what he wanted, after all. For people to notice him. It was just easier to get attention in the wrong ways. Yes, it almost always ended in people being angry or annoyed at him. But at least they knew he existed. When it came to losing house points though, it was a particularly risky way of drawing attention. It could result in a lecture by the headboy or headgirl, if he was lucky. But he had fucked up so many times already he was wondering how long it would take for professor Winter to call him to her office.

So naturally, when professor Nephelae told him he had just lost a point for his house, again, he panicked. With wide eyes he stared at her, for a moment too overwhelmed to say something, anything. Could he go into a discussion with her, or would that only make it worse? She probably hated his guts right now because he had broken the telescope. ”It was an accident”, He whispered, as he dropped his gaze in shame. He did not like this feeling. At all. ”I- I didn’t mean to..” He stammered on, in a weak attempt to defend himself. A soft sigh sounded as the shock turned into the feeling of utter defeat.
